Most Common and At-risk Employment Sectors in Suffolk County

According to census information[1], the most common employment sectors in Suffolk County are (from highest to lowest):

  • Healthcare and social assistance (e.g. nursing, home health aides)
  • Educational services (e.g. elementary, middle, secondary and postsecondary teachers)
  • Retail (e.g. salespeople, cashiers)
  • Construction
  • Professional, scientific and tech services
  • Manufacturing
  • Accommodation and food service
  • Transportation and warehousing

The United States Department of Labor states that healthcare workers are at the highest risk of any occupation for nonfatal injury. Other employees at high risk for nonfatal injuries at work are:

  • Truck and taxi drivers
  • Laborers and stock workers
  • Construction workers
  • Janitors and cleaners
  • Police officers
  • Firefighters
  • Corrections officers[2]

Fatal work injuries are most commonly sustained by those in the transportation sector, including truck, taxi and farm tractor drivers. Construction workers and animal care professionals (e.g. veterinarians, wildlife rehabilitators) are also at higher risk for fatal work injuries.[3]
